Pullen Park's Holiday Express Is Sold Out. Raleigh's Holiday Calendar Isn't.

November 5, 2026

If Holiday Express sold out before you got to the Ticketmaster queue, what's left for the rest of the season? Quite a lot. Most of what's left is free, and the few events that charge cost less than the $21 train ticket you missed.

Tickets aren't what runs short in Raleigh this December. Time does. The city's holiday calendar is built around a handful of crowded weekends, and one of them, Dec. 11 through 13, puts four separate events on the same Friday evening. If you plan around that weekend now, you'll get more out of the season than you would have with any single ticket.

The One Ticket That Ran Out

Pullen Park Holiday Express runs Tuesday, Dec. 1 through Thursday, Dec. 17, from 5 to 9:30 p.m., at $21 plus tax and fees per guest. Tickets went on sale Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. The City of Raleigh's Holiday Express page now says they're sold out. This year the event adds a hot chocolate bar called Club Cocoa Lounge in Shelter 1. The City and the Rotary Club of Crabtree produce the event, and WRAL is the presenting sponsor.

If you're still hoping to go, the City's rules matter. Each ticket has an assigned train time, and requests to change times cannot be honored. Tickets are limited to eight per household, and every guest age one and older needs one, whether or not they ride the train. Tickets can be gifted or resold, but only at face value and only through Ticketmaster, and the City warns buyers to be careful with third parties they don't know. WRAL reported on Oct. 1 that it planned to give away VIP family four-packs during the event's run if tickets sold out.

Holiday Express covers the weeknights of early December, and the rest of the calendar fills in around it. The first crowded weekend comes before December starts.

Nov. 20–21: Downtown on Friday, Then the Parade Morning and Pullen at Night

The season opens with two days back to back. On Friday, Nov. 20, the Downtown Raleigh Tree Lighting and Holiday Vendor Market runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Moore Square.

The next morning is the Raleigh Christmas Parade, put on by the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association. It steps off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, from Hillsborough Street at St. Mary's Street and covers about 1.4 miles through downtown.

That evening, Pullen Park hosts a holiday night for adults only. Pullen Park After Dark: Merry & Bright runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 520 Ashe Ave. It's 21 and older and costs $20 through RecLink. The City lists lights around the lake, live music and dancing, carousel and train rides, games, crafts, and a North Pole visit. Food and drinks cost extra. For adults who missed Holiday Express, this is the closest thing to it: the same park, the same train, a dollar less, and ten days before Holiday Express begins. Its tickets opened Oct. 2, two weeks ahead of Holiday Express, so check RecLink before you plan around it.

Two indoor options start a week earlier. Beginning Friday, Nov. 13, the Sippin' Santa holiday pop-up bar runs at Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing, 201 S. Boylan Ave., through Dec. 31. The Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts has holiday shows from Nov. 13 through Dec. 23.

Dec. 4–6: Small Events, Mostly Free

The first weekend of December is lighter, and most of it costs little or nothing.

  • Friday, Dec. 4. The Illuminate Art Walk opens downtown and stays up through Jan. 3. Downtown Raleigh Alliance's theme for 2026–27 celebrates North Carolina's people, places, culture, history, landscapes, and creativity. The same evening, the City of Raleigh Museum hosts a free Sip n' Shop from 5 to 9 p.m. at 220 Fayetteville St.
  • Saturday, Dec. 5. Gingerbread and a Jolly Trolley Ride runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $15. It meets at Fred Fletcher Park, 820 Clay St., takes a trolley to Latta University Historic Park, and ends with gingerbread-house decorating. Frost Fest is also that day, at Gipson Play Plaza.
  • Sunday, Dec. 6. Candy Cane Lane starts at 4 p.m. at Greystone Recreation Center, 7713-55 Lead Mine Road. The $10 event includes crafts, family contests, a holiday movie, prizes, cocoa, popcorn, and snacks.

These events are spread across downtown, Oakwood-adjacent Latta, and North Raleigh, and none of them overlaps much with another. The following weekend works the opposite way.

Dec. 11–13: The Weekend Everything Lands On

Moore Square Winterfaire is shorter in 2026. Last year it ran four days, Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 11 to 14. This year it runs three days, Friday through Sunday. Winterfaire is free and open to all ages at 201 S. Blount St., run by Raleigh Parks with MAKRS Society. It advertises more than 70 vendors, food trucks, live music, Santa, and a beer garden. With one fewer day, its weekend crowd has less room, and the same three days are already full across the city.

When Event Where Cost
Fri., Dec. 11, 5–9 p.m. Moore Square Winterfaire Moore Square, 201 S. Blount St. Free
Fri., Dec. 11, 5:30–9 p.m. Soulful Holiday Open House John Chavis Memorial Park, 505 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Free, RecLink registration
Fri., Dec. 11, 5 p.m. Holidays Around the World Barwell Road Community Center, 5857 Barwell Park Drive Free
Fri.–Sun., Dec. 11–13, 5, 6 or 7 p.m. Santa's Trolley Mordecai Historic Park, 1 Mimosa St. $17, advance registration
Sat., Dec. 12, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Moore Square Winterfaire Moore Square Free
Sat., Dec. 12, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Merry and Bright Open House Mordecai Historic Park Free
Sun., Dec. 13, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Moore Square Winterfaire Moore Square Free
Sun., Dec. 13, 1–4 p.m. Merry and Bright Open House Mordecai Historic Park Free
Sun., Dec. 13, 1–3 p.m. La Chocolatada de Luisito City of Raleigh Museum Free

Friday evening is the tightest part. Four events start within half an hour of each other, in four different parts of the city. The Soulful Holiday Open House at John Chavis Memorial Park is a full evening on its own, with themed rooms, inflatables, photo spots, crafts, live entertainment, and decorations inside and outside the center. Santa's Trolley has riders join Holly on the Historic Raleigh Trolley to search for Santa, with an optional s'mores stop before or after. Since it runs at set times on all three nights, Saturday or Sunday frees up Friday for something else.

Mordecai is the easiest place to combine events. Its free Merry and Bright Open House on Saturday and Sunday and the trolley's evening departures happen at the same park, so a family can do the open house in the afternoon and come back at dusk for the ride. On Sunday, Winterfaire closes at 5 p.m., four hours earlier than on Saturday. That makes Sunday morning the calmer time to shop the vendor tents.

After the Crunch

Once that weekend is over, the calendar spreads out again. The free holiday open house at the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 511 S. Wilmington St., has period-accurate Christmas decorations, music and games, a guided tour, and treats. There's a children's story hour from 10 to 11 a.m. and carolers from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Raleigh's community center celebrations continue through Dec. 20. The Martin Marietta Center shows run until Dec. 23, Sippin' Santa at Wye Hill pours through New Year's Eve, and Illuminate stays up downtown through Jan. 3.

That means the late-December weeknights, when Holiday Express has already closed for the year on Dec. 17, may be the least crowded time to walk Illuminate or get a table at Sippin' Santa. The City's Raleigh for the Holidays page collects most of these events on one calendar, and the RecLink links on each event page show where registration is required.

I've watched Raleigh's December calendar grow for more than 30 years, and knowing where the busiest weeks fall is the same local knowledge I bring to every client conversation.
